Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – following McLaren were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake in the region of five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Ownership Structure

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who each also own a third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no comment on this. The governance of the team stays unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in F1."

Valuation Increase

The deal signifies a significant increase in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos acquired its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise reflects the expansion in market values of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned over $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

It is Pitt's most successful film and the most successful sports movie ever released.

Present Performance

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix so far and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
