The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
